The Baron Gautsch is a wreck in the upper Adriatic, described as the most famous and most beautiful wreck in that part of the sea. It lies at a depth of 28 to 40 metres and measures 84.5 metres in length and 11.6 metres in width.
The ship was built in 1908 as a passenger vessel sailing from Trieste along the Adriatic coast. It was requisitioned by the Austro-Hungarian navy at the start of the First World War and sank in 1914 after a navigation error took it into its own minefield.
Divers descend along the buoy line and can enter the top deck through a large window opening on the forward deck. Corrosion has removed the floor planks, so the lower decks are visible. Conger eels and schools of fish live around the wreck.
