Batea sits off the department of Sucre on Colombia's Caribbean coast, near the Islas de San Bernardo and Bahia de Cartagena region, a stretch of coastline dotted with small islands and reef patches typical of the southern Caribbean shelf. The reef reaches a maximum depth of around 16 metres and is rated a beginner dive, with local boats from towns along the Sucre coast serving as the usual access point. The bottom here holds boulder brain coral, lobed star coral, and mountainous star coral, and divers have reported redband, stoplight, and striped parrotfish moving over the reef.
