Cenote Azul is a freshwater cenote located near Playa del Carmen in the Yucatán, with crystalline waters and a maximum depth of 20 metres. The site features shallow sections alongside greater depths, making it accessible to a range of divers, though it carries a technical difficulty rating overall. Rock formations are visible below the surface, and the cave bottom environment offers distinctive karst geology typical of the Yucatán peninsula.
Cenote Azul stands out as one of the few cenotes with vegetation both inside and outside, which makes it a favoured spot for underwater photography. Fish and aquatic plants are present throughout, and water temperature holds at 27°C. Visibility is rated as great, a characteristic of the site's filtered freshwater.
Access is to a cave environment, and the combination of shallow and deeper zones means the site suits both newer divers exploring the upper reaches and more experienced divers pushing into the depths. The photographic opportunities created by the surrounding vegetation and the azure water draw enthusiasts looking to capture the interplay of light, plant life, and rock formations.
