Coal Oil Point is a reef snorkel and dive site on the southern California coast near Isla Vista and UCSB, sitting within the Campus Point State Marine Conservation Area (SMPA), a no-fishing zone protecting sensitive sea life across a roughly 10-square-mile stretch from Campus Point past Coal Oil Point.
The site has two distinct character zones: the outer stretch along the point offers the best reef exploration, while the sandy shallows deeper inside the protected cove on the southside are the place to look for leopard sharks, which can be encountered in waist-deep water. The southside cove is significantly more sheltered than Sands Beach on the northside, which faces open swell directly.
Conditions carry real hazards — strong currents, swell, and the presence of leopard sharks are all noted risks. The southside cove is shielded from much of the swell, but the site is not recommended when surf is heavy, both because of wave action and surfers sharing the water. The site suits beginner-level divers when conditions are calm, given the protected entry and shallow leopard shark zone, though the strong currents demand awareness.
