Deep Reef is a submerged plateau in Pemuteran Bay on the north west coast of Bali, found in 1996 and one of the bay's signature advanced dives. Its steep sides rise from 38 metres to a top at 12 metres, and it is a five to ten minute boat ride from the beach.
The plateau carries some of the largest table corals in the bay, and giant leather corals fold across the steep sides, along with big plate sponges and barrel sponges. Red flaming scallops sit tucked under overhangs. Eagle rays cruise the deeper edge in the colder months, from June to September, which are the best time for rays and schooling pelagics, and schools of fusiliers and jacks pass through reliably.
The depth and the colder, current-touched water keep the reef in unusually good health. Surface conditions in the bay are sheltered most of the year, but visibility here varies more than at the shallower sites.
