Froggy Lair is a shallow muck dive on the northeast periphery of Mabul Island, just off the edge of the local jetty and a short boat ride from the island. The seabed is a sprawling sand expanse covered in fine volcanic silt, littered with reef crevices and artificial debris such as discarded tires, which act as nurseries and hiding places for small animals.
Depths run from 5 to 10 m, which allows bottom times over 70 minutes. Visibility is about 5 m and the drift is gentle. It is a strict macro environment suited to Open Water divers with excellent fin control, since stirred-up silt ruins the view.
Giant, painted and clown frogfish hide among the tires. Ghost pipefish, flamboyant cuttlefish and bright nudibranchs are frequent subjects, and blue-ringed octopus are sometimes found, so look and do not touch.
