Hunga is a reef dive site located in the open ocean off Nungwi, in northern Zanzibar, and is typically paired with the nearby site of Nankiville. The reef reaches a maximum depth of 16 metres, sitting on a flat sandy bottom well covered with corals. Large coral bommies are scattered across the site, made up mainly of hard corals alongside a colourful variety of soft corals.
The marine life at Hunga rewards both active scanning and careful observation. Schooling snappers and dusky sweepers congregate at the North tip, while the South tip holds a crack where a leaf fish hides among clouds of glass fish. Shoals of barracuda, snappers, and sweetlips move through the site, along with individual napoleons and groupers. Searching the sandy areas between rocks turns up crocodile fish and scorpionfish, and nudibranchs, marbled groupers, and lobsters in the reef crevices are also commonly encountered.
The site is accessed by boat, and divers should be prepared for a quick descent to around 15 metres. Visibility is generally great, which contributes to the site's appeal. Hunga is well suited to beginner and intermediate divers, given its maximum depth of 16 metres and accessible conditions.
