Kilima Steps, also called Kilima Beach, is a multi-level coral reef at Puerto Galera with broad terraces. It runs from 5 to 40 metres and starts in shallow water, with flat areas broken by small walls and ridges at all depths. The deepest ridge is at 30 metres.
The reef is crowded with life. There are schools of anthias, surgeonfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and parrotfish, and moray eels are very common, often one or two under most coral heads. Frogfish, banded sea snakes, turtles and octopus also turn up, and a school of batfish tends to hang around at 18 metres. A big school of hunting longnose emperors often speeds past. Pygmy seahorses are common, and it is the only place in Puerto Galera to see the palette surgeonfish. Redtooth triggerfish gather above you by the deeper walls.
Thresher sharks sometimes pass through the deeper blue beyond the final step on early-morning dives.
The dive has to be done on a flood tide, when the current is weaker.
