Kovalam Reef is a reef area at Kovalam, shaped partly by artificial reefs placed in the area by the Central Marine Research Institute. The reef is healthy enough to draw large visitors, and a whale shark once surfaced beside a boat anchored over it, letting divers swim alongside for as long as they could.
The sea was calm and the water clear on the day of that sighting. Olive Ridley turtles live here too, and divers have found a giant trawl net weighing more than 200 kilograms on the reef, along with ghost nets, so removing plastic and debris is part of looking after the site.
