About this site
Magic Wall sits off Aorangi Island near Matapouri, on the east coast of Northland, New Zealand, close to the Poor Knights Islands marine reserve. As the name suggests, it is a wall dive along volcanic rock formations shaped by Pacific swell, reaching a maximum depth of around 30 metres and rated a beginner dive. Nudibranchs are a regular find along the wall, and divers have also reported a wide range of other life here, including barracuda, clown doris, Cook's scorpionfish, eastern king wrasse, eastern pigfish, frogfish, grey moray eels, mantis shrimp, New Zealand black angelfish, New Zealand demoiselle, scorpionfish, fusiliers, trevally, tuna, yellowtail kingfish, and even the occasional manta ray. Strong currents have been reported at times, so conditions can vary from the easy beginner profile the site is generally known for.
