Maracaibo is a deep wall dive located at the southern tip of Cozumel, one of the most remote and exposed dive sites on the island. Its position at the southernmost end makes it highly susceptible to unpredictable currents and topside surf, and because the southern end of the island drops off gradually, the wall begins at around 100 feet (30 m), with the overall depth range running from 70 to 150 feet (21–46 m).
The terrain is defined by a dramatic, deep wall with massive sponges, black coral trees, and an arch at 115 feet (35 m) that divers typically pass through during the dive. The wall itself offers imposing scenery and significant drop-offs, though its depth means bottom time is limited unless the dive is planned as a multilevel profile. The real action at Maracaibo tends to unfold in the midwater, drifting well above the ocean floor rather than close to the wall face.
Maracaibo is known for larger pelagic encounters: schools of hammerhead sharks and shoals of eagle rays are not uncommon as divers drift through the midwater column. Black coral trees and massive sponges characterise the wall structure itself, and deep-water pelagics are a feature of the site generally.
Currents here are described as unpredictable and can be strong, and the site's remote southern location adds to its exposed nature. This is an advanced dive requiring deep certification, and it is not suited to divers who need to stay close to the wall or who lack experience managing strong, variable currents.
