Northstar is a wall dive on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands, part of the Cane Bay Wall system and considered more pristine than Cane Bay. It is about a mile east of the Davis Bay area and is recognised by the first pull-off, 100 feet east of the dilapidated building after the Jungle site.
The entry is difficult, with no sand channel to walk out to a reasonable depth. It is only recommended on calm days with little wave action, and booties should be worn. Divers describe it as no joke, so take the necessary precautions. Look for elkhorn coral structures while swimming out to the marker buoy.
The wall: a wall lies 75 yards from shore in 25 feet (8 m) of water and drops vertically to about 400 feet (120 m). That makes it a multilevel dive with plenty of fish, sharks and topography. There is a cavern at 280 feet (85 m) with a nice chimney.
Black tipped reef sharks, large elkhorn corals, sea fans, whip coral, rock beauties and schooling tangs, wrasse and triggerfish are common. Jacks, mackerel, sennets and squid are possible. For technical diving, setup and tear down take patience: stage the bottles one at a time in the water before going in with the heavy kit.
Confirmed by our research team, reported by independent divers, or observed nearby via iNaturalist — each entry is labelled with its source.
