Osprey Reef is a remote coral sea reef located in Australia's Coral Sea, reached exclusively by liveaboard vessel departing from Cairns. It is one of several celebrated dive sites visited on extended expeditions that also take in the Great Barrier Reef's Ribbon Reefs, and it is accessible only when weather and sea conditions permit.
The reef is defined by dramatic walls and significant drop-offs, making it a wall dive with the deep blue Coral Sea water as its backdrop. The terrain includes the kind of towering vertical relief and deep-water environment that distinguishes the Coral Sea from the inshore Great Barrier Reef.
Osprey Reef is known for its exceptional visibility and encounters with pelagic and reef shark species, including grey reef sharks and silvertips. Reef sharks, giant trevally, barracuda, turtles, and schools of tropical fish are among the marine life recorded at the site. North Horn, a specific location associated with shark diving, is part of the Osprey Reef area and is noted as one of Australia's most celebrated shark dive locations.
The site suits certified divers comfortable with open-ocean, deep-water wall diving and is considered intermediate in difficulty. It is a boat-access-only site, well beyond the range of day trips, and conditions — including visibility and currents — reflect the exposed, remote nature of the Coral Sea environment.
