Polhena Reef forms a calm, shallow lagoon just off the beach, so entry is straight from the sand with no boat and no deep water. The water is protected and there is no current.
Green and hawksbill turtles come to feed on the seagrass, often only a few metres from the shoreline, and rays, parrotfish, butterflyfish and soft corals share the lagoon. Mornings are best, when the water is clearest and the turtles are busiest. The main season runs from November to April.
After dark the lagoon changes. Corals open to feed, crabs and lobsters leave their holes, and turtles sleep wedged under the rocks.
