The Sapona Wreck is one of Bimini's most famous dive sites, located in the Bahamas within the legendary Bermuda Triangle. The vessel ran aground during the Great Hurricane of 1926 and subsequently served as a storage site for illegal rum during Prohibition. It has also been connected to the mystery of missing Flight 19, featured in a James Bond novel, and used for U.S. military training exercises. The wreck has since transformed into an artificial reef.
The site reaches a maximum depth of 11 metres (36 feet), with a reef bottom, and the wreck structure is now heavily colonised by colorful coral and tropical fish. Visibility is great, and current runs light, making it a comfortable dive for exploring the hull and surrounding reef terrain.
The Sapona suits Open Water certified divers and beginners. It is a boat dive, accessible year-round, and the site is dived as part of a day-trip excursion from the Fort Lauderdale area with a ferry crossing to Bimini.
