About this site

Shaab Quais — also known as Shaab Quais Maksur or Al Aruk — is a coral garden and offshore reef forming part of El Aruk reef, situated south of Big Giftun in the Giftun Islands, the closest island group to Hurghada. The site is accessed by day boat.

The underwater terrain consists of coral blocks with soft corals, rising from a depth of 0 m to a maximum of around 30 m. The structure suits drift diving, and currents can run strong.

Fish life is regularly reported around the coral blocks, and the site is noted for big-fish encounters. Hammerhead sharks, white-tip sharks, barracuda, jacks, tuna, clownfish, and grouper are among the species recorded here, with the main season running from June through December.
