Fahal Island, also known as Shark Island, lies a short boat ride from Muscat in Oman. It is a fossilised limestone formation of Eocene limestone and marl with three prominent pinnacles showing above the surface.
The dive sites around the island are caves, tunnels and steep drop-offs, including a cave swim-through, and a torch helps in the caves. Depths run from 10 to 40 metres, with deep reefs at 40 metres and a tugboat wreck at 30 metres on the northern side.
Blacktip reef sharks give the island its nickname, and eagle rays are seen as well. Moray eels, scorpionfish, boxfish, barracuda, clownfish, tuna, jacks and other rays share the water, with plenty of hard and soft coral and impressive shoals of reef fish.
