SMS Cöln is a 118-metre, 5,500-ton German light cruiser lying in Scapa Flow, Orkney. Built in Hamburg in 1916, she was scuttled along with the rest of the interned German fleet and now rests on her starboard side, making her one of the more striking wreck dives in the Flow.
The wreck reaches a maximum depth of 36 metres, with the top of her hull coming up to 19 metres — giving a good range of depths across a single dive. She lies largely intact, and notable features include the anchor chain, guns, armoured bridge, rangefinder, and name-ship shield. The hull has developed numerous swim-throughs that can be navigated, though caution is advised inside.
The Cöln is rated as an intermediate dive, suited to divers with the experience to handle wreck penetration carefully and to manage the depths involved in Scapa Flow diving.
