St Crispin Reef is an outer Great Barrier Reef site situated about 35 miles off the coast of Australia in the Coral Sea, roughly an hour and a half from Port Douglas. The reef is classified by the Marine Park Authority for "Intensive" use, permitting larger vessels to visit, though only four moorings are available across the site. Dives and snorkels typically focus on the southern end, where a gap in the reef creates strong water flow that encourages prolific coral growth — a section locals call the "Flower Gardens." The coral formations there are interspersed with deeper sandy patches.
Marine life at St Crispin is varied across both the reef structure and the sandy areas. Large schools of fusiliers and sergeant major fish are common, along with numerous sweetlips and regular visits from bumpheaded parrotfish. Many wrasses and butterflyfishes are present, and shy reef sharks are occasionally seen. The gap at the southern end is particularly dense with feather stars. The sandy patches hold sea cucumbers and giant clams, while smaller creatures — nudibranchs, seasquirts, sea urchins, and hermit crabs — reward slower, more attentive exploration throughout the reef.
