Dived here today? How were conditions vs. what we showed?
Sunrise Reef is a gradually sloping reef in Yap, Micronesia, and it marks the northern boundary of the regularly dived areas. Depths run from 30 to 100 feet (9 to 30 m).
The terrain is a very gradual slope that gives a large area of habitat for coral growth. The gentle drop-off provides hundreds of acres of habitat at 40 to 70 feet (12 to 20 m), where hard corals flourish. Numerous large coral pinnacles rise from the reef and are covered with a wide selection of marine life.
Corals here are in pristine condition and the variety of hard corals is exceptional. On this one dive you can see over three times the number of coral species found in the whole Caribbean.
Fish life is wide and plentiful, with reef fish, turtles, stingrays and sharks. Look for giant clams hiding in coral crevices.
Conditions are usually easy. Visibility is 60 to 100+ feet (18 to 30+ m) and the current runs from 0 to 2 mph (0 to 5 km/h), light on the day-to-day.
