Um El Faroud is a wreck on Malta's south coast, near Wied iz-Zurrieq. It is a former Libyan oil tanker, built in 1969 and about 110 m long, prepared as an artificial reef after an explosion ended its working life. It sits upright on sand.
The wreck has huge deck areas, a superstructure, a large propeller, pipes and numerous openings and open cargo spaces to explore, and it offers several routes on different dives. Divers often choose the stern, the bow or the engine room. It broke into two sections in a severe storm, which created an additional feature.
Depths usually run between 25 and 35 m, and the wreck is dived within a 15 to 36 m range. At these depths bottom time, air consumption and ascent need careful planning.
Divers normally enter from the shore and swim several minutes underwater to reach the ship. The return swim is just as long, so gas management matters from the start.
This is an advanced wreck dive. Going into enclosed spaces needs experience, good buoyancy control and qualified guidance.
