This site lies near Monterey, California, along the Monterey Peninsula on the central coast, where a wharf structure extends into Monterey Bay within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Divers here have reported bat stars, blue rockfish, giant sea stars, gumboot chitons, purple sea urchins, and red sea urchins clustered around the pilings. The wharf's pilings and surrounding bottom provide the kind of structure that draws these encrusting and grazing species in the sheltered bay waters.
