About this site
8 Miles takes its name from its distance offshore, a submerged rock roughly eight nautical miles out from Koh Lipe in the Adang-Rawi archipelago near the Thai-Malaysian border. It is an open-water pinnacle with little shelter, and that exposure is exactly why it draws the fish it does. The site is one of the far south's better big-animal bets. Whale sharks and reef mantas are the headline visitors, with schooling barracuda, trevally, eagle rays and grouper holding around the rock and macro life such as ornate ghost pipefish tucked into the reef. Strong tidal current and variable visibility come with the territory this far out, and the reef runs down to around forty metres. It is an advanced, tide-timed dive, and like the rest of the Koh Lipe sites it is dived in the dry season once the boats can reach it.
