About this site
The Andrea Doria is an Italian ocean liner that sank in 1956 after colliding with the Swedish liner MS Stockholm in fog off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The wreck lies on its starboard side, with verified depths reaching 53.3 metres, and has long been nicknamed the Mount Everest of scuba diving because of its depth, cold water, low visibility, and strong currents. It is rated a technical dive, undertaken by experienced wreck divers using mixed gas, and it has claimed the lives of several divers over the decades since it was first explored. The hull, once over 200 metres long, has deteriorated significantly with time, with sections of the superstructure collapsing further each year.
