About this site
The Antikythera Wreck lies off the small island of Antikythera in the sea between Crete and the Peloponnese, in a stretch of water long known for treacherous currents. The site is famous as a Roman-era shipwreck discovered by sponge divers in 1900, which yielded bronze and marble statuary and the Antikythera Mechanism, an ancient geared device now held at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Archaeological survey and excavation work has continued at the site in more recent years using technical and robotic diving methods rather than recreational diving.
