About this site
Banco D. João de Castro is a submerged volcanic seamount in the Azores, located in the sea channel between the islands of Terceira and São Miguel. It rises from deep water to within a few metres of the surface and was briefly an island above sea level following eruptions in the mid-19th century before eroding back below the waves. The seamount is reached by boat from the surrounding islands, most commonly Terceira.
