About this site
Bougainville Reef is an isolated reef in the Coral Sea off the Queensland coast, well north of the main Great Barrier Reef tourist routes, and is marked by a lighthouse on its northern tip. It sits far offshore and is generally reached only by liveaboard vessels making longer passages through the Coral Sea rather than by day boats out of Cairns or Port Douglas. Diving here is rated advanced, consistent with its remote, exposed position away from sheltered reef systems. Divers have also reported manta rays passing through the site.
