About this site
The British Splendour was a British-flagged oil tanker torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1942 while sailing off the North Carolina coast, part of the heavy wartime losses in what became known as Torpedo Junction. The wreck lies off the Outer Banks in the Atlantic, broken and scattered across the sandy bottom in an area with strong Gulf Stream influence. Depths are commonly reported in the range of 60 to 70 metres, putting this well beyond recreational limits and firmly in technical diving territory. Because of the depth, current, and offshore location, it is considered a serious, advanced dive typically undertaken by trained wreck or technical divers running mixed gas.
