About this site
Buracona lies on the northwest coast of Sal Island in Cape Verde, near Palmeira, and is best known as a natural sinkhole and swimming spot where light entering through an underwater opening gives the water a blue glow. As a scuba site it is shallow, with a maximum depth of around 7 metres, which fits its reputation as a spot more often visited for snorkeling and photography around the rock pool than for a formal dive. Sal's surrounding waters are volcanic in origin, with dark rock formations typical of the island's northern shoreline.
