About this site
Cannibal Rock lies off Rinca Island in the southern part of Komodo National Park, where cooler, nutrient-rich water pushes up from the Indian Ocean. It is a pinnacle site with a soft coral and sponge-covered reef bottom, reaching a maximum depth of around 30 metres, and is rated a beginner dive despite the strong current that runs through the area. Visibility is generally good, and the site holds confirmed sightings of frogfish, manta rays, and nudibranchs, making it popular with critter hunters and macro photographers. Divers have also reported barracuda, batfish, bumphead parrotfish, hairy frogfish, harlequin shrimp, mackerel, mola mola, nurse sharks, ornate ghost pipefish, rhinopias, scorpionfish, snapper, and trevally here, giving the site a mix of small camouflaged life and larger passing species. A single source also notes cold water and strong tidal flows as hazards, so a proper wetsuit and attention to the current are worth planning for even though the site itself is graded for beginners.
