About this site
The Chester Poling was a coastal tanker that broke apart and sank in a storm off Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1977, with the stern section later relocated near Gloucester Harbor to serve as a dive site. The wreck sits upright on a sandy bottom and is a popular boat dive out of Gloucester, known for cold, dark New England water and encrusting anemones, lobster, and schooling fish typical of the Gulf of Maine. It reaches a maximum depth of around 30.5 metres and is rated an intermediate dive, calling for some cold water and low visibility experience rather than suiting absolute beginners. Its compact size and accessibility make it one of the better known wreck dives along the Massachusetts coast.
