About this site
The Guvernoren was a Norwegian whale factory ship that caught fire and was deliberately run aground near Enterprise Island in Antarctica's Wilhelmina Bay in 1915 to save the crew. The wreck now lies partially in the water just off the small island, with part of its hull still visible above the surface, making it one of the more recognisable wreck sites in the Antarctic Peninsula region. Divers exploring it typically encounter cold, clear water and the ship's structure encrusted with marine growth adapted to polar conditions. Depths are shallow near the exposed hull but drop off further from shore. Diving here is limited to expedition-style trips, usually run from ships visiting the peninsula, and is considered demanding because of the extreme cold, remoteness, and need for dry suit experience.
