About this site
Doubtful Sound is a fiord in Fiordland, on the southwest coast of New Zealand's South Island, in the Southland region, with Secretary Island sitting within the wider sound complex. It is reached by boat from Deep Cove, well beyond road access, and is known for a freshwater layer sitting atop denser seawater that darkens the water column below. The fiord's steep underwater walls drop quickly into deep, dark water typical of Fiordland's marine environment.
