About this site
The Duane is a former U.S. Coast Guard cutter deliberately sunk off Key Largo in the Florida Keys in 1987 to form an artificial reef. It sits upright on a sandy bottom in around 100 to 130 feet of water, with the top of the wheelhouse rising to roughly 80 feet. The ship was a 327-foot Treasury-class cutter, sister to the Bibb, which was sunk nearby around the same time. It is rated an advanced dive, a grading that reflects its depth and the current that often runs through the area, and divers commonly report large barracuda, jacks, and goliath grouper around the hull.
