Dunbar

The Dunbar wreck lies off South Head at the entrance to Sydney Harbour, New South Wales, marking the site of an 1857 disaster in which the clipper ship Dunbar was driven onto the rocks below the cliffs during a storm, with only one survivor from more than one hundred people aboard. Wreckage from the ship remains scattered across the reef and gutters close to the cliff line, having broken up heavily on impact and in the surge over the years since. Depths are shallow, generally in the range of a few metres to around ten to fifteen metres, close to the rock platform. Conditions can be exposed given the site's position right on the open coast near the harbour entrance, so surge and swell are common considerations, making it a dive best attempted in calm weather. Divers have also reported bull sharks in the area, worth keeping in mind given the site's exposed position near the harbour mouth.
