About this site
Eddystone Lighthouse marks a reef roughly 9 nautical miles south of Plymouth Sound, off the Devon coast in southwest England, at the western edge of the English Channel. The rocks have been notorious for shipwrecks for centuries, which is why a succession of lighthouses has stood on the site since the late 1600s. Dive boats running out of Plymouth make the trip out to the reef when conditions allow, and the site is rated advanced, reaching depths of around 40 metres. Divers have reported significant depths and strong currents as hazards here, so conditions need respect. Marine life sightings have included dolphins, ocean sunfish, nudibranchs, and wrasse around the reef structure.
