El Ancla De Francois lies in the Gulf of Mexico off the western end of Cuba, near the Guanahacabibes Peninsula in Pinar del Rio province. This stretch of coastline sits within a marine protected area known for its rugged, undeveloped shoreline facing the Yucatan Channel. The site reaches a maximum depth of around 15 metres and is rated a beginner dive.
