About this site
Embalse Peñol-Guatapé is a large reservoir in the eastern Antioquia region of Colombia, created in the 1970s by damming the Nare and Guatapé rivers for hydroelectric power. The flooded valley submerged part of the original town of Peñol, and the lake now spreads around numerous islands and inlets near the town of Guatapé, close to the well known rock formation of El Peñón de Guatapé. It draws mostly recreational boating and tourism around its shoreline and islets.
