About this site
Empire Gem lies off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, in the stretch of Atlantic waters nicknamed Torpedo Junction for the string of merchant ship sinkings there during World War II. It was a British tanker torpedoed by a German U-boat in early 1942 while running along the East Coast shipping lanes. The wreck rests offshore in the deep water typical of this stretch of the Outer Banks, an area known for strong currents and challenging conditions due to its exposure to the open Atlantic and the Gulf Stream.
