About this site
The Empress of Ireland lies in the Saint Lawrence River near Rimouski, Quebec, where it sank in 1914 after colliding with the Norwegian collier Storstad, one of the deadliest maritime disasters in Canadian history. The wreck now rests on its side in the cold, dark waters of the river, reaching a maximum depth of around 33.5 metres. It is considered an advanced dive, consistent with the depth, current, and low visibility typical of this stretch of the Saint Lawrence.
