About this site
Nazaré sits on the central coast of Portugal in the historic Estremadura region, known widely for the giant winter swells that break off Praia do Norte near its lighthouse, or farol, on the headland. The site takes its name from that lighthouse, which overlooks the submarine Nazaré Canyon offshore, one of the largest underwater canyons in Europe. The town's harbor and coastline are more associated with big wave surfing than with recreational diving.
