Giant Staircase lies off Tawhiti Rahi, the northern island of the Poor Knights Islands group, off the Northland coast of New Zealand's North Island. The Poor Knights are a marine reserve formed from volcanic rock, and sites around Tawhiti Rahi are typically reached by boat from Tutukaka.
