About this site
Hannibal Bank is a submerged seamount in the Gulf of Chiriqui off the Pacific coast of Panama, within reach of Coiba National Park and the town of Puerto Mutis. It is known primarily as a big animal site, drawing divers for encounters with large pelagics such as sharks, rays, and seasonally migrating whales, thanks to nutrient-rich currents that sweep up the seamount, and tuna have also been reported passing through. The site reaches a maximum depth of around 46 metres and is rated technical, reflecting the open ocean, pelagic environment divers face out here along with the exposure to swell and current. Visibility can vary considerably depending on plankton bloom and current strength.
