About this site
Isla de Lobos sits off Punta del Este, at the point where Uruguay's coast meets the Rio de la Plata estuary and the open Atlantic. The island is best known as a sea lion colony and reserve, and dive excursions there include the wreck of the Ciudad de Santander, a vessel that went down in the surrounding waters. The area's mixed estuarine and ocean currents make this a stretch of coast with a long history of shipping mishaps.
