About this site
Jan's Tunnel, also known as Lost World, is a cave dive at Aorangi Island off Matapouri on the Northland coast, close to the Poor Knights Islands marine reserve. The volcanic rock formations along this stretch of coast have carved out swim-throughs and archways, and the site is reached by boat from the small coastal settlements nearby. It is rated an advanced dive, reflecting the overhead cave environment here. Divers have also reported clown doris, Cook's scorpionfish, eastern king wrasse, eastern pigfish, New Zealand black angelfish, New Zealand demoiselle, and yellowtail kingfish moving through the site.
