The Jan van Ryswyck is a wreck dive on Whirl Rocks. She was a Belgian steamship that ran onto this reef in thick fog on 21 May 1924, on passage from Antwerp to Grangemouth with a cargo of pig iron, steel ingots and general goods.
The site is very exposed and is best dived on neap slack water. On spring tides the slack period is much shorter, and divers must stay alert, because the site can quickly become a boiling mass of racing tidal water and down currents. It is rated advanced, with strong current.
From the anchor line you descend a short submarine cliff to find the bottom covered in wreckage. The two boilers and the triple expansion engine still stand upright on the seabed, and there are scenic gullies and walls around the wreckage.
Visibility is variable. It has been as poor as 5 to 6 metres with low light that calls for a good torch, while on earlier visits it was 20 metres or more. A lumpsucker has been seen nesting on an exposed spot here, testing its grip against the strong current.
