Kreidesee Hemmoor

Kreidesee Hemmoor is a flooded former chalk quarry near Hemmoor in Lower Saxony, northern Germany, not far from the Oste river. The pit is known for its striking turquoise water, a result of the chalk substrate, and has become a popular freshwater dive destination for clubs across northern Germany. It reaches a maximum depth of around 60 metres, with a sunken tower and other structures placed in the water for divers to explore, and the site is used for both recreational dives and training courses. Given its depth, diving here is rated advanced overall, though shallower areas near the structures see plenty of traffic. Visibility is generally good by inland lake standards, though the deeper, colder layers require attention to thermoclines and buoyancy control. It draws divers from across the region partly because true clear-water quarry diving is uncommon in this part of Germany.
