About this site
La Passe lies off Grand Port on the southeast coast of Mauritius, in the southwest Indian Ocean. As its name suggests, it marks a break in the surrounding barrier reef where the lagoon exchanges water with the open sea, a feature typical of channel sites in Mauritius's reef system. Divers here have reported brown tang, Moorish idols, yellow boxfish, and three-spot dascyllus moving over the reef, along with Indian redfin butterflyfish, Indian Ocean humbugs, pacific trumpetfish, button stars, and thin-shelled rock crabs. The mix of reef fish and small invertebrates points to a site with varied structure rather than open water.
