Manta Sandy

Manta Sandy is a shallow reef cleaning station in the Dampier Strait, Raja Ampat, sitting at depths of 5–18 m (16–59 ft). The site is best known between October and April, when plankton-rich waters attract large numbers of reef mantas that gather at preferred cleaning stations, allowing cleaner wrasses and butterflyfish to remove parasites accumulated during long migrations. On productive days, up to 20 mantas can be seen somersaulting and circling the cleaning stations simultaneously.

The terrain is sandy and shallow, offering crystal-clear visibility. The site is rated beginner level and lends itself to long, slow-paced dives, making it particularly well suited to wide-angle photography. Current ranges from mild to strong, though conditions at the cleaning station itself are often calm enough for extended observation.

Strict approach rules are observed at the site: divers remain behind a designated line to avoid startling the mantas, which can be easily spooked and may abandon the area for extended periods if disturbed. These protocols allow encounters lasting up to an hour. Strong currents are the primary hazard to be aware of, depending on conditions.
