About this site
Looking for shelter at Portage Entry, the steel steamer Maplehurst was swept by huge seas and unable to make progress towards safety. Rescuers were able get 9 crewmen to jump to their lifeboat, but the others remained with the ship as she lost power and drifted into the breakers. Their bodies were recovered as they washed ashore later. Too badly damaged for salvage, her remains were dynamited as a hazard to navigation. Lies in about 6.1 m; sank 1922.
